Hi, Rajani LaRocca!

Rajani LaRocca: Hi, John!

Thank you for visiting Watch. Connect. Read. to finish my sentences about your forthcoming novel in verse, Mirror to Mirror.

Rajani LaRocca: Thanks so much for hosting this cover reveal! I’m so thrilled to be talking to you about my newest middle grade book, Mirror to Mirror, coming in March 2023 from Quill Tree Books/HarperCollins!

Congratulations!

I wrote the words in purple and Rajani wrote the words in black.

Vrinda Zaveri’s cover illustration and David Curtis’s cover design for Mirror to Mirror is absolutely gorgeous and reflects so many aspects of the story. The twin main characters’ different personalities shine through, as do the elements of nature (including “twin” maple seeds!) and music.

Mirror to Mirror tell the story of Maya and Chaya, identical twins who love music almost as much as they love each other. But Maya has a secret that’s eating her up, and when Chaya tries to tell their parents about it, Maya shuts her out. To take pressure off her sister, Chaya changes everything about herself — the way she looks, and the music she plays. But this only drives the girls further apart.

Then Maya and Chaya make a bet: they will pretend to be each other at their music summer camp, and whoever lasts the longest without being discovered will get to decide something important to them both. While pretending and playing each other’s music, each sister discovers important things about her twin. . . and about herself.

Mirror to Mirror is about family and friendship, music and anxiety, guilt and forgiveness, and how love can help us overcome even the most paralyzing fear.

There are musical descriptions, food metaphors, and stories within this story — these themes occur in many of my books.

Poetry Speaks to our hearts in deep and fundamental ways. As Voltaire said, “poetry is the music of the soul.”

John Schu, you should have asked me whether I have a twin. I don’t — I don’t even have a sibling! But I interviewed several sets of identical twins for this story, and I was astonished by their deep connections. While working on this book, I felt Maya and Chaya come alive, and I loved writing about these characters and their special bond, which is strong even when the girls feel divided.
